on a diet with missed period High Protein/Low carb diet success!
Hello, I was diagnosed almost 6 years ago with PCOS after a blood test and ultra sound verified my doctors suspecions.  I had missed period when I was in my late 20's and 30's sometimes going as long as 9 months without a period.  After using Provera to induce periods if I went longer than 90 days without a period, my periods finally stabalized to about a 60 day cycle +/- 5 days.  I had horrible cramping and bled very heavily with awful clotting and such.

I was diagnosed almost 6 years ago with PCOS after a blood test and ultra sound verified my doctors suspecions. Then last year I discovered www.pcos.org and it literally was like a lightbulb turning on in my head.  I had been begging my GYN for the last year or two to put me on a diet because even though friends told me kindly I was not fat, I am 5'6 and I started to tip the scales over 180 lbs and I was miserable. I ran, lifted weights etc... and the weight just would not come off! My GYN just told me to eat less but I did not feel I was eating that much in the first place.  Problem was she never bothered to ask me what I was eating. So after reading the _link_s at pcos.org and reading about the Zone and Atkins diet  and weighing that against wondering if I should ask my GYN about Metformin, I decided to opt for the high protein diet.  Since January 18, 1999 I have lost 45 lbs and I want to lose not more than another 10-15 max.  I wear size 10 now, I weigh 135-140 lbs and I want to eventually get into a size 8 but I will not die if I do not attain that goal... More good news.... my periods at first dropped to a CONSISTENT 35 day cycle and recently dropped to a 29-30 day range!  I am amazed!  I have less cramping, and pain with my periods... the bloating is hardly what it used to be, and another side benefit?  MY SINUS SEASONAL ALLERGIES ARE GONE!  I no longer take Claritin for my allergies! So this is no longer a diet to me, this is a life_style_ change and I feel my body is no longer a mystery to me.  Thank God for the good folks at pcos.org! Good luck everyone, this changed my life in such an exciting way!  I hope everyone has the success I did! Thank you, Bobbi Perrin

Bobbi: A high five to you! I'm thrilled and impressed by your success. I tried Atkins and did lose weight but since protein is a diuretic, I became convinced that a big portion of that might have been water loss, since it came right back on when I stopped. Why did I stop, you ask?  I don't know...I guess it's because I had some carb meal sometime thinking it wouldn't be a big deal and POW, I was re-addicted to carbs. I have found a lot of healthful balance (but without weight loss)  in being able to eat high-fiber fruits and complex carbs (like whole grains, brown rice, etc)....were you able to integrate any of those things into your diet?  I would really like to learn from your success, since I am about the same height and weight now as where you started! However, I'm a little scared of making myself diet again....because just choosing healthy balanced choices keeps me from getting obsessive and weird about food. Did you try The Zone or Atkins, and to what degree of severity? I also wanted to congratulate you on your diligence, your renewed health, and tell you I think your signature quote (Tolkien) is very wonderful. ~xklm

Good luck everyone, this changed my life in such an exciting way!  I hope everyone has the success I did! Congradulations and a big hug to you!  I also became a low-carb success last year with Protein Power and I also found that many health problems unexpectly cleared up, like allergies, frequent headaches, persistent body odour, etc.  It's amazing how healthy low-carb eating makes people when all they thought they were trying to do was lose weight, but then I've heard it said that a healthy body will always maintain the proper weight.  I think the key here is finding what we need to do to be healthy and the rest naturally follows. It's now a warning sign for me when I push it in maintenance that I've overdone it when I get a headache or get fatigued for a long period of time.  In fact, it's incentive for me to stay low carb as much as possible because I just don't feel good when I don't. Congradulations again.  I know how you feel, having been there myself. It's like you're flying, like you can do anything.  The confidence is incredible.  It's so empowering isn't it?  I'm thrilled to see another cyster experience that joy and exhileration!  I wish it would happen to all of us someday.
