Hi Ladies and Gents!   I'm going on vacation in August.   I'm traveling to England,  Scotland and Ireland..(from Arizona!!!)))  And of course, I MUST visit the yarn and knitting stores!!!!   Here are the cities I'll be in! Southampton, Dublin, Holyhead, Belfast, Greenock, Kirkwall, and S.Queensferry.......I'd love to have advice on the yarn stores and the weather...I know absolutely nothing, so whatever you offer is welcomed!. It's QUITE HOT in Arizona, but just how cold is it gonna be in these cities! Thanks to all of you who respond!!!!  Thanks, Maggie

Yarn shops: I don't know of any specifically in any of those places.   However, there is a John Lewis in Southampton: they are a department store which tends to have a good yarn department.  I haven't been to the Southampton branch, but other branches usually have Debbie Bliss, Rowan and Jaegar yarns at the luxery end, as well as Sirdar and Patons at the more modest end.  The address on their web site is WestQuay, Southampton.

It's QUITE HOT in Arizona, but just how cold is it gonna be in these cities! Thanks to all of you who respond!!!!  Thanks, Maggie From past trips (in May and in August), my experience has been that you'll be fine with a combination of a cardigan and a thin rainjacket, with a hood (or a foldable rainhat), and a folding umbrella if you want one to cover whatever you're carrying around. The weather varies from comfortably cool to cold drizzle, with occasional very hot days - by my standards, which may not be yours.  If you're adapted to Arizona weather, you'll probably want a thicker cardigan.  As a northerner, I was happy with a cotton one. Other Tips: the same airline that told you your carryon bag was just fine on the way over, and gave you two free check-throughs, is likely to measure your carryon and say it's too big and charge you extra for anything more than one check-through bag, _and_ charge for extra weight! One way to make room in your luggage is to pack clothing you intend to wear just one more time and throw away. Your most valuable items are your ticket home and your passport. Since you won't need to have them readily available most of the time, I'd recommend wearing them in a body stash when they're not in the hotel safe.  Those belt packs with the quick-disconnects are not a safe way to carry valuables. I don't know about yarn stores - there seem to be relatively few. There are some well-known yarn stores (the names escape me) but I think they are in London and other large cities. I think the best bet is to ask at the tourist advice center (when I went, they were very clearly marked and there was one in every town).  Also look in the telephone book, ask in small shops, etc. I once heard that the museum in Dublin had some old _meta_l implements that some people think might have been knitting needles or crochet hooks; if you happen to see them, please let us know your opinion. =Tamar

Thanks to all of you who respond!!!!  Thanks, Maggie Can't tell you anything about the weather, but my immediate thought was the difference in electrical currents, if you use a hair dryer, contact lens cleaner, or anything electrical that you need on a daily basis.  'Course, you could always solve that problem by buying one there, I suppose, depending on the item.  Have a great trip.
