The last time I went to Mexico (about five years ago?), I simply got on a passenger train in Campo, CA, rode across the border to Tecate, Mex (no formalities at all in that direction), took a tour of the brewery in Tecate, got back on the train are rode back to Campo. At Campo, we all had to sit on the train while it was inspected by immigration (for stowaways). When we de-trained, we simply walked pass an immigration officer, but no questions were asked. No wonder they're trying to tighten things up. I can see being that loose with Canada since there's not much net migration, but Mexico is a different story. S

Out of curiousity, does he have dual citizenship? No. I don't think the US allowed that in 1962, and I am not sure what the Japanese position was or is. He should. A child-hood friend of mine was born in Canada in that same year - two month preemie from an emergency C-section while his parents were on vacation - and has dual citizenship.

It's not difficult or expensive to get a passport. It's under $100 to get one by mail, which takes less than an hour of gathering documents and doing paperwork; if you're flying out of the US, you're already spending more money and time than that. . . . True. You will admit that someone making a boarder crossing into Canada or Mexico for a day trip isn't spending that kind of time or money. People would like to make such trips on the spur of the moment. Right, so once per decade they need to spend a little time and money to get a passport and they can make all the spur-of-the-moment trips they want. What's the matter with you? Americans don't carry their passports with them, not having to make daily crossings of international boarders where they are required. This will END spur-of-the-moment trips.

One normally does not need to prove one's citizenship when registering to vote, but only affirm that one is a citizen. In my state, one is asked for state or country of birth, and if naturalized, for the date of naturalization, which may be sufficienct to challenge a voter claiming to be naturalized although not at the polls.

Yeah. Potential saboteurs walking into the US have been a real problem over the years. Your confidence in the integrity of our borders, especially the southern one, and most especially east of San Ysidro and near Douglas, Ariz., is not reaffirming. And those people will be stopped for passport inspection, too, if crossing in the desert in the middle of the night. Good one. And they are terrorists, not people looking for work.
