Is it true that you burn the same calories walking as running as long as you cover the same distance? Thanks, Barb          I don't know about recent studies, but this issue was resolved in the 70-80s. I used to post this often, but I guess it's time to do it again.         Walking is the *most efficient* way to bi-pedally locomote

Yes there are extremes in calorie burning for walking rule of thumb is 4 mph and above starts over taking running (for set distances not time) as a calorie burning exercise I looked up a bunch of different calorie calculators on the web and naturally got somewhat different results from each of them. Also, there were very few which would give numbers for walking above 4 mph. But these are roughly the values which they provided - all numbers are calories/mile for a 150 lb person: running (any speed): 115 - 120 walking (2-4mph): 85 - 100 walking (5mph): 110 - 115 walking (6mph): 115 - 125 Only one source actually took walking up to 7 mph, and it cited a figure of 136 cal/mile for the 150 lb person! - Bob C.

At the self-selected step mentioned above, the legs are working at just this natural frequency, and the calorie burn is thus a minimum.  At higher frequencies (faster walking), the oscillations are now *forced*, which takes energy, which is proportional to the square of the amplitude of the oscillation, and linear with the frequency.  Actually, the leg is more like a compound pendulum, but the principles remain essentially the same.         THUS,          The figure for 7 mph might appear out of line, but is consistent with the non-linearity of calories in walking.  If the numbers are from different sources, it's hard to grok a trend, unless you have large amounts of data.         This pendulum business actually sheds some light on Tony Little's near-useless contraption, and also Leslie Sansone's walking fraud, but I'll save that for another post.         Tony looks cute, what with his ponytail wagging out of the back of his _base_ball cap, but I think the main purpose of the cap is to conceal a receding hairline.

I looked up a bunch of different calorie calculators on the web and naturally got somewhat different results from each of them...        Where did you find your numbers?  I'd like to take a look myself. If I remember correctly, I used AltaVista (http://www.altavista.com) to do a search on calorie calculator , then searched through the results to see which looked useful, then went to those sites the find the very few that actually were useful. But I never did find a single source which I liked enough to bookmark. I also got some numbers of out a book on walking which I have at home ( Walking by Casey Meyers). - Bob C.
