I had a friend who ran a gym and told me of the many people he knew who had permanently injured themselves as a result of running a marathon. On Sunday, I watched the Flora London Marathon 2008 on TV. Thirty four thousand people crossed the finish line. Sadly I was not one of them, having failed to secure a place in the race. When I lived in London, I was able to cheer the runners on from my garden, and have dreamed of running the race ever since. I also know many runners who have run marathons and done so without long term negative health effects. So, on Sunday, I applied for a place in the 2009 Flora London Marathon, dusted off my trainers and went for a run, and as I ran, I wondered just how good is running a marathon for you? Running a marathon is not easy due to the time you need to commit to training. You need to have a plan, and have commitment, but as I have shown the rewards in terms of your health, fitness, and mental health more than outweigh the effort you have to put in. |

The night before, eat a big meal of carbohydrates, such as pasta, which should provide you with the energy needed to fuel your body throughout the race. When it comes to the race morning, you should definitely eat something, although don't eat to excess, otherwise you might find yourself forced into an unscheduled pit-stop to answer the call of nature! With regards to nature's calls, make sure you visit the toilet right before you start the race to minimise the chance of having to make any trips to the WC once you've started. The road to readiness for a marathon is a long one and anyone who has taken on the challenge of running one will know that the preparation takes months. In an age of high priced athletic shoes and broken glass on streets, barefoot running is a rare sight. But, more coaches and trainers are turning to barfoot training for their runners and now recreational athletes, tired of expnsive shoes and lower extrmities injuries, are picking up on this new trend. It is acually not so new, as people have been running barefoot for hundreds of years. Zola Budd made barefoot running famous by breaking the women’s 5000 meter world record in 1984, running barefoot. So, why are we all paying high dollar for cloth and rubber to surround our feet? Are shoes the problem or the solution? Many are not in agrement about barefoot running and the debte between barefoot proponents, coaches, trainers, runners and podiatrists is in full swing. |
