Bob Why don't you want racers? There is increasing evidence that flat shoes (ie without the ridiculous high heels of many modern training shoes) cause less damage. Also, you can often get them quite cheap (they are rarely very expensive to start with, and often in the bargain bin). I now do all my training in flats and am loving it.
