running shoes' Running shoe advice

Can anyone give me any tips as to which type of running shoe would offer me best value for money ? I only run approx 5km 4 or 5 times a week (between 11 and 15km/hr) on a running machine in my local gym. I am 6 feet tall and weigh approx 93kg and get occasional shin splints and knee ache. I am changing my current 4 year old non de_script_ Nike Airs as I am finding that the inside balls of my feet and big toes are getting blistered. Having read several articles I assume that I am an overpronator and coupled with my build I would benefit from a sho which offers cushioning and stability. I have seen the New Balance 855 mentioned as apparently being suitable on a few web sites but, at £70, I would want to be sure it was what I needed but I would prefer something cheaper. Any advice would be appreciated. Regards Mike

Mike, don't know where you live but its best to go to a decent running store for advice. 4 years old seems very old for a pair of running shoes, they will have lost their bounce even if they were any good in the first place. Most areas have a specialist shop with people who know a bit about running. They normally have a treadmill or foot scan so they can assess your running _style_ and offer an appropriate pair of shoes. Asics, New Balance, Brooks, Saucony are all popular brands who make proper running shoes. Try buying a copy of runners world as they have loads of adverts for shoes and shoe shops as a starting point.

It would be a good idea to post what area you live in as someone here might recommend a decent running shop where you can get properly fitted. A good shop will assess you and your running _style_, and will present you with a whole range of shoes to try out. Don't forget to take your old running shoes in so the staff can assess the areas of wear. The right running shoes needent cost a fortune, but you *do* get what you pay for. I've never quite got on with Nike shoes and recently moved to New Balance - the fact that they do width fittings should sort out your blister problems (along with decent socks). I originally looked at 855's, but they weren't quite right - I tried 1220's and they were perfect so I went with those. You won't know until you try different shoes out and compare them directly - get the shop to let you run outside or on a treadmill for each pair of shoes you try. I bought my 1220's from Birmingham Runner, and was pretty confident that they were right for me. Even so, the shop still said that if I did an 8-10 miler in them and they didn't feel right, just to take them back and try something else! I don't think you can fault that sort of service!! Once you find the right pair, try and get outside to run too - It's lovely out there! :o) All the best

Thanks for the advice so far. I live in Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, can anyone recommend a good specialist shop in the area ? I've often been recommended Advance Performance - 110 & 114 Fulbridge Road, Peterborough, 01733 891111, http://www.advanceperformance.co.uk/ although I've never yet been there myself. Tony

Tony Mike...don't know Advance Perf. but loads of running shoe shops in Peterborough. Not sure if you should take advice from them. Know before you buy. Look up Which magazine in local library.Another good shop small but knowledgeable owner, Norfolk St, Wisbech. PS. Did the Huntingdon Marathon twice. Best time 3hrs10 at age 50. I would go for New Balance as someone has already mentioned...Ken
