I've seen a number of postings over the years on dejanews re: sesamoid bone injuries. I'm interested in people's experiences and success, both with and without surgery. The relative lack of responses from people who've had these injuries suggests they've all dropped out of running. I sincerely hope that's not the case. I've been trying to heal one for 7-8 months now. Any replies will be apprecaited.

I sincerely hope that's not the case. I've been trying to heal one for 7-8 months now. 7-8 months? My initial reaction - is this self diagnosis or from a doctor? Let's assume the diagnosis is correct. I would seriously suggest you look into your biomechanics. My bathroom shingle suggests you are a pronator( excessive pressure on the big toe as you roll in) and need to get this corrected. Sometimes a more rigid shoe is enough but more likely a pair of off-the-self or custom orthotic is necessary to correct the imbalance. Now tell us what you have done for these many months to get at the root cause and thus a solution. Most of the texts suggest with ice, pads, orthotic, etc relief is a few weeks, not months. If it's not sesamoids and in fact a stress fracture et al and you continue to run, I can see the months of problems. From a random web page. Sesamoiditis Inflammation and swelling around the sesamoid bones can be secondary to trauma, infection, stress fractures, or a systemic disorder. Sesamoiditis may also be precipitated by a cavus foot with excessive weight bearing under the first _meta_tarsal. Sesamoid shape may vary and in some cases may be especially thick or pointed. A sharp pointed sesamoid might cause a deep seated callus to form under it. Symptoms include pain on weight bearing and with dorsiflexion of the great toe and pain with direct palpation. The first _meta_tarsal Phalangeal joint may also show swelling. Custom orthotics will reestablish proper weight distribution and with an added _meta_tarsal pad, will also unload the sesamoids from pressure. By correcting the gait of the foot (usually overpronation) there will be a lesser need for dorsiflexion of the MTP joint again reducing stress of the sesamoids.
