how to do the splits Teaching body to do 'splits'- a right way?
This question concerns streching, doing the 'splits' specifically. Is there a 'safe' way to teach your body to do the splits. There seems to be a great deal of pressure on the knees. Anyone with experience with helpful knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me at: First, the disclaimer - I am not suggesting that you do the following, only making you aware of a device and method available. Some Martial Arts shops sell equipment which uses hydraulic cylinders, controlled by the user, to aid in hip abduction stretches. You sit in the device with your legs spread as far as you can spread them, and pump a cylinder which spreads them farther, very slowly. It is my _opinion_, unsupported by testing of any kind, that if one were properly warmed-up , such an assisted stretch, used in a PNF mode, might, over time, increase flexibility to the point that one could do the splits . It is also my _belief_ that one who performed this action with no medical supervision would be very foolish, indeed. Just my 2p Bill Whedon

Try lying on your back next to a wall, with your bum at the _base_ of the wall and your legs vertical. The weight of your legs should gradually stretch the ligaments, tendons and muscles around the joint. Take things slowly. Any excercise is at your own risk.

: Some Martial Arts shops sell equipment which uses hydraulic : cylinders, controlled by the user, to aid in hip abduction : stretches. Sounds like using a rack to help you grow taller. Yeah, that was my take on 'em, too. The things some folks will put themselves through! Bill Whedon
