firstly don't get me wrong i like the manics but i think they have lost their edge and become pop not rock. when they play their old songs they sound like the band we all loved, then they churn out the songs that made them popular to the masses and you feel that the hard edge has gone. i know bands have to change, or die musically, but just can't help feeling disapointed when i see the manics being raved about on kids/teens tv when they should be taboo, why do our bands feel they have to become pop. all of them have done it. what a shame and what a waste.

cover versions like Raindrops and Last Christmas.... THEY ALWAYS HAVE. Pisses me off when pay say those things, cos they obviously don't know what they're talking about. Cat Exactly, and I don't see anything wrong with performing on kids tv.  Richey was once criticised for appearing in Smash Hits, but he said he wanted to reach the kiddie audience ('kill yourself before you grow up' or something. The more people that know about the manics the better. ~NN~

why do our bands feel they have to become pop. all of them have done it. Firstly, the Manics were 'popular' before Richey left, they played lots of festivals and on quite a few music programmes. However, I will assume that you are talking about their music, and how it has become more 'public friendly'. I think it's because, once they get to a certain age, most bands just want to settle down, earn some cash, and not do anything too strenuous. Without Richey to drive them, they've lost most of their their anti-establishment principles (although that refusal to play in front of the queen showed a glimmer of hope) and with Nicky, who has settled down, married and is content and happy, writing all the lyrics, we're never going to get any more Richey-_style_ lyrics; no one could do that anyway. EMG was successful because they still had Richey with them in spirit; they were determined to make it work for him. I don't really see what the big problem is. I've liked manics since early 1990's and I don't think they've sold out. Even though the new album is their weakest yet, I still think it is a great album. I think that lately they have developed their own _style_ , not The Clash thing... jon

The more people that know about the manics the better. yeah but it isn't the same now because the whole point of reaching the SH audience was to revolutionalise the way they thought.  the manics now are so adapted that the kids don't have to.  you don't find any simply new manics fans reading literature much.  or not because it has anything to do with the manics.  to be honest, i always thought reading because of the manics was kind of dumb anyway, but it did mean they got exposed to culture.
