dsl without phone service AKICIF: DSL without phone service?
We have regular phone service through BellSouth, anmd Earth_link_ DSL coming in on the same line. If we cancel the BellSouth POTS, will that also cut off the non-BellSouth DSL?

In theory one is able to not provision a line for voice, while still allowing DSL on it, and I wouldn't be that surprised if the actual hardware at the CO was able to handle it. I would, however, be surprised if the current administrative and billing setup was able to handle it.

I would, however, be surprised if the current administrative and billing setup was able to handle it. It could be worse. See http://www.geocities.com/flutocracy/cablemodem.htm

It's not much done because the ILECs own the copper and are incredibly resistant to letting anyone else rent it from them. They would prefer to sell you POTS and DSL, billed separately, preferably along with their own internet service, again billed separately, and their long distance service, again... It took Sprint years of court battles to force Verizon (hack, spit) into allowing them access to the lines and Verizon nearly 5 months to qualify my line for ION service. This included three full days of wasted vacation on my part waiting for them to show up and do so, despite the fact that all they needed was access to the demarc in the back yard and the fact that I already had existing DSL service. Sprint had ION up and running within a week after Verizon finally broke down and did their job. Then they ended up canning the entire project three months later. It's still the best all around service I've ever had, and I'm still angry that Verizon, SBC and the other ILECs drove it into the ground. Robert
