Well, first off, it's Groucho, no t in his name. And you'd need to be more specific- Groucho has lots of sayings/jokes. It's what he did for 50+ years. If you're really interested, I'd suggest checking the library. Marx wrote an autobiography, a collection of short essays, and there's also a collection of his correspondance availible. They're full of jokes and pithy phrases. Doug Turnbull

They're full of jokes and pithy phrases. This guy asked for quotations, not for remarks on the availability of Groucho's works; for Shakespeare quotations you can look in Shakespeare, so? Anyway, here are some Marx quotes from Sir Hans' quotefile (containing, at the moment, about 55,000 quotations with sources: Sir Hans doesn't need this newsgroup anymore). @A: Marx, Groucho (1895-1977) @Q: I sent the club a wire stating, ^please accept my resignation. I don't want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member^. @R: _Groucho and Me_ (1959) ch. 26 @Q: I went up to the stage door, but it was locked. So I went around to the front door and came into the theatre. And the stage was all lit up, but the theatre was so dark, I couldn't see a thing. Is there anyone up front? So I go down, in this Stygian darkness, to the front row, and I take a seat. I am now sitting on... I can't think of his name. @R: _The Groucho Letters_ (1967) @Q: I can't understand why you don't get any mail from me. Perhaps it's because I haven't been writing. @R: _The Groucho Letters_ (1967) @Q: It isn't necessary to have relatives in Kansas City to be unhappy. @R: _The Groucho Letters_ (1967) @Q: From the moment I picked up your book until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it. @R: in Hector Arce _Groucho_ (1979) p. 188 @%: A blurb written for S. J. Perelman's 1928 book _Dawn Ginsberg's _

Well, I was letting him know- I bet a lot of people don't know Groucho wrote any books.(I didn't, until two weeks ago.) I apologize for trying to be helpful. I won't let it happen again. I'll be especially sure not to imply that a person could actually get off their butt and find exactly what they want on their own in about 5 minutes, rather than waiting for 2 weeks hoping someone else will do it for them. Doug Turnbull Jeez, let's be defensive. Just wondering, Doug, why do you follow this newsgroup? It seems to me to be filled with many such requests. I suppose all of these people should just find it themselves. I mean, this is alt.quotations, isn't it? Oh, let's not have people asking other people who collect or enjoy interesting, thoughtful, or humorous quotations for help. We can't have that, can we?

can't have that, can we? That's fine, but I don't see that as contradicting any attempts to point a person to a resource on their own. Do you also think people should not tell others about web sites or other on-line resources for quotes? How is this any different? To bring it back to this specific case, if someone is interested in Groucho Marx quotes, their best bet is to go and look at the books he wrote. If they do that, it will be faster than the reponse of the newsgroup and they will also get many more jokes/quotes than anyone would ever post. Many requests are much narrower, or are vague in a way that a simple dictionary of quotations or other obvious resource won't help. This newsgroup is a good alternative, since it allows you to pick a lot of people's brains at once. I will plead guilty, however, to the charge that I think the net induces laziness in a lot of people, and many requests that are made on the net would be better pursued in other ways. Doug Turnbull
