I purchased a Nikon Coolpix about a year or so ago, and it takes outstanding photos.... so long as the subject is still. My daughter plays volleyball, and the (i guess) shutter speed, etc. is just not fast enough to take any kind of action photos, much less be able to zoom up close. Is there a digital out there that can now do this? ( I don't want to spend $5000). Do I need to stick to 35mm format for the time being until the technology catches up? Thanks in advance JC PS If you have a camera to recommend, where is the best place to buy it?

I have the same problem, and it's not so much the shutter speed as the maximum aperture being too small, thus not enough light can get in, thus your camera requires a slow shutter speed. I think the answer is to take only _base_ball pictures on bright days or to get one of the SLR digital cameras (d-100, etc) that will take your film lenses. If you have a good 2.8 lens on the slr that should solve your problem (for $1500!!).

For $1500 (camera + battery & charger only, no lenses) the Canon EOS 10D does a fantastic job. The ISO3200 is really too noisy and I have utilised the menu option to disable it, but it does a good job at ISO1600 and provides decent shutter speeds. Max aperture depends on lenses, but at ISO1600 even cheaper lenses give good shutter speeds. In good light my 75-300 USM lens (listed at around $180) works well and give decent zoom (equivalent to 120-480) though my 28-135 IS USM (around $400) is the better lens generally. The best lens for the job is probably the 70-200 f2.8, but that is a little pricey.

just look for any camera that has either a sports mode, or a shutter priority mode, that way you can increase the shutter speed to more than high enough to freeze sports motion. i think some point and shoot digitals can go up to 1/2000th of a second or higher, that should stop pretty much any motion. check http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp for cameras with this feature.
