a reservation with one of these charter operations, you give your address as well as your name. I assume that you did so. The reason is that by law the public charter (which Winair was) operator must deposit the funds received by customers for specific flights in escrow accounts to be released if that flight doesn't fly. So if it goes bankrupt, you still get your money back because the charter operator hasn't earned it if the flight doesn't fly. (This isn't a legal opinion, it's just my understanding of how it works.) If, as with SunJet, the charter operator goes out of business or doesn't fly a particular charter, the escrow bank refunds the fee to the charter patron (you) automatically. This raises another question: have we seen the end of these public charter operations that function like an airline (i.e. operate essentially scheduled flights?). Has the combination of the fear of non-major carriers and the fact that the majors (through their discount operations) and the discount airlines have now entered most of the routes that could have been niches for the public charter operators (e.g. NY-Florida, LA to Vegas, SF, etc.?). These were good operations when the majors had high fares and were disinclined to do too much to compete with the SunJets of the world (although they surely did make an effort to drive them out, just not a broad-_base_d one).

Good point, Bill. However, my girlfriend was not actually holding a ticket
