I have just found out not to long ago I am pregnant. Iam eight weeks now. I have been smoking for 11 years. I am trying very hard to stop but it is so hard!II have gone from smoking 1 1/2 packsof Marlboro every day to 1/2 pack of Marlboro Ultra Lights per day. I am a nurse so I know that smoking is dangerous for my baby. My doctor says that 1/2 pack of light cigarretts daily should not do any damage. My first child is fine, and I smoked with her, bit I feel so guilty! Any suggestions?I would love to hear from someone who has stopped. Thanks!

who has stopped. Thanks! I stopped and I know there are others here who did too (Rhonda, XiolaBlue [I think]) and a few others. It took me until I was 6 months pregnant to actually quit for good, but I did it and I'm still going strong. Download this program (Smoke Free Stats): ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/.3/sac/educult/smokfree.zip It will keep track of how long you've been quit for, how many cigarettes you haven't smoked, how much money you haven't spent, and if you like, it will also track how much time you've added to your life by not smoking. I know it's tough - like I said, it took me until 6 months to quit with my second child, and I didn't quit at all with my first. Good luck! Meghan I haven't had an evil thing for 5 Months 3 Weeks 10 Hours 14 Minutes 14 Seconds. Bad things not smoked: 3488. Money not spent: $697.71.

who has stopped. Thanks! The only way I can say worked for me was cold turkey. I smoked for 7 years before my first son was born, I smoked 1/2 a pack of 4mg cigarettes a day whilst pregnant with him (born 7 pounds, 9 days overdue) This pregnancy, I cut back dramatically in the first 2 months then decided it would be better just to quit permanently. The first 2 weeks are the hardest, but it is better for you and your baby in the long run. I only smoke now if im so stressed out I cant handle it and I only ever have 1 or even 1/2 of 1 just to get that nicotine hit. Good Luck Melissa Mum to Jesse (2) and Jacob (edd 11 Nov 00)

My first child is fine, and I smoked with her, bit I feel so guilty! Any suggestions?I would love to hear from someone who has stopped. Thanks! I have never smoked, so I can't offer any specific advice. Just a couple of comments. 1. Cutting back from 1 1/2 packs to half a pack is great. It is likely to make a difference in the health of your baby (and YOU.) If you can stop completely, it will help even more; if you can't, you must do the best you can. Nicotine is extremely addictive, so stopping will be hard, but if you can do it, the benefits (health, economic) are enormous! 2. Shame on your doctor for telling you that half a pack should not do any damage. While the risks to the baby go down as the number of cigarettes go down, even moderate smoking CAN harm the baby. Sounds like your doctor is more interested in 'not making you feel guilty' than in giving you honest information. Naomi
