My husband has just been diagnosed with kidney problems from an old kidney infection (not related to low carbing).  Anyone have any references on how to low carb while having low kidney function (30%) and diabetes?  The nutritionist insists that he should follow a low-fat diet and have no more than 60 grams of protein per day.  I know that low fat is wrong and so does he.  I don't plan to follow her advise regarding the fat, but any ideas on the protein and other nutrients? I wouldn't do more than moderate fat (30%). 200 gram meat per day is not much, though. I hope he likes broccoli!

Read the book Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. The author is an MD who has been a type I diabetic since the 1940s. He talks about reversing kidney disease with a low carb diet. He also goes into great detail about what causes the damage. There's a free online version at http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/readit/readit.shtml His diet does wonders for diabetics. However, and it is a BIG however, doing a _sloppy_ job of low carbing could be hazardous if it meant that your husband ate more protein plus a bunch of cheat carbs, since it is apparantly the carbs that are doing the damage that lets the protein leak out of the kidney.  So he'd have to be motivated to learn about foods. Eating the low carb snack bars that are really full of hidden carbs, for example, could cause him problems. And there are hidden carbs in a lot of other foods. Also, I'd advise him to calculate his protein needs very carefully and not do the Atkins gorge on meat and cheese version of low carb. I have a page, _link_ed below, which tells you how to calculate your real protein needs while low carbing. They are usually much less than people realize. Then use software to track what he is eating to make sure he is really hitting his nutrition goals. The side effects of doing this will be 1) normal blood sugars without meds (or with less meds) 2) weight loss 3) avoidence of other diabetic complications.

Thanks. Find a doctor that will support you wanting to stay low-carb. Oh, and then give the other doctor the finger and tell her to get up to speed. Chris

My mother in law has kidney disease, is on the transplant list, and needs to start dialysis.  Kidney disease is NOTHING to play with!!!
