Actually Joanie, there seem to be some folks at alt.support.thyroid that are doing well on low-carb.  From what I understand, many that have thyroid problems also have a tendency toward insulin-resistance, and so respond better to low-carb or low-glycemic diets.  (While I am hypothyroid, I don't appear to have the characteristics of insulin-resistance, so it's not universal among thyroid patients

thanks for the swell post KC. I didn't even know there was an alt.support.thyroid group! I will go and have a look at the URL you wrote about too.  When you say signs/characteristics of insulin-resistance.. what do you mean ?  Do you mean resistant to the effect of insulin? or just don't produce as much?   I know before I was diagnosed, I would exercise alot, and not ever sweat, even though I was really working hard...  and I would not lose any weight either. My _meta_bolism was slowed to a dead halt I guess. Now, I can get a thrill (this will sound silly to alot of people, I am sure) ,.. and I mean a thrill, out of knowing I have a drop or two of sweat trickling down my face, or that my tshirt is getting soaked because of my exercising!

Here are the guidelines for the body types, this week'sa issue of WOman's WOrld magazine has an excellent article on this plan too. THE KEY TO YOUR BODY TYPE: THE DOMINANT GLAND Your Body Type is determined by your dominant gland. This means that it depends on which of your body's four major glands dominates or controls your _meta_bolism. And your glands do so much to shape your body that when you know what to look for, you can uncover the secret of your dominant gland. The four major glands are called the thyroid gland, the adrenal glands, the pituitary gland and the gonads or sex glands (in women, the ovaries). Each of these four glands has its job to do in the body, which it does by producing hormones-powerful biochemical substances that affect the entire body. Depending on which of these glands dominates your system, you will have a strong tendency to overeat the foods that stimulate your dominant gland whenever you need energy. Everyone does this automatically-because we enjoy the rush of hormones that your dominant gland gives and that you experience as energy in your system. Each gland gives a different feeling-for instance, thyroid hormones create a lively, zippy, up feeling. Adrenal hormones give a feeling of power and energy, like you could move the world. Ovarian hormones give a warm, cozy, connected feeling. And hormones from the pituitary gland give a feeling of calm, detachment and mental clarity. According to your Body Type, one of these feelings feels most like you , and the foods that give you that feeling are the ones that you will always tend to crave whenever you're tired or stressed. FOOD CRAVINGS AND YOUR DOMINANT GLAND Which foods stimulate each of these four glands? Science tells us that the thyroid gland is stimulated by sweets, starches and caffeine. So Thyroid Types eat (or overeat) those foods. Thyroid-stimulating foods: sweets, starches, caffeine Adrenal stimulants are fats and salt The adrenal glands are stimulated by fats and salt. So Adrenal Type people love to eat meat, cheese, peanuts-anything rich and salty-in order to get that adrenal-hormone rush. The ovaries are stimulated by rich and spicy foods like Mexican and Thai - so G-Types turn to them to get the kind of hormonal rush they crave. The ovaries are stimulated by rich, spicy foods The pituitary gland is stimulated by dairy foods  Pituitary Type people eat the foods that stimulate the pituitary-milk, yoghurt, ice cream and fruit-to feel the way they like to feel. So there you are, using certain foods to stimulate your dominant gland. For a while, it works. But as you go on with your life, you start to overdo it. Your dominant gland becomes stressed and tired. You lose energy, and so you need to eat more of those foods just to keep going. Eventually your dominant gland is exhausted. And you are tired, have terrible cravings which you fight only with tremendous will power, and (in most cases) are over your ideal weight for health and energy. For Help Determining Your Body Type... Your accuracy in determining your Body Type depends on how well you are able to answer the series of questions. I have realized for a long time that some of the questions are difficult to answer accurately. For example: Body shape. This is the most important factor in determining your Body Type, but it depends on how well you can determine your basic body shape-not the shape that changes as you gain or lose weight, but your underlying shape _base_d on your bone structure. In some cases this may be more difficult to determine, usually because of weight, age, or general health. Food cravings. These are usually good Body Type indicators, but occasionally there are environmental factors that confuse the issue. For example, you may be an Adrenal Type who was raised in a family of mainly Thyroid Types, and you have a strong craving for sweets through early conditioning. Personality and temperament. These are not as reliable as Body Type indicators as shape, fat deposits and cravings, yet they too are partially derived from glandular influence. Yet the factors that make up the human personality are very complicated. In any case it is difficult to be _object_ive about ones own personality.
