Does anyone know of any serious nuclear warfare simulations for the IBM PC. I read of one some years ago called 'Bravo Romeo Delta' but its graphics did not look that brilliant and it never made it out to Australia. I am looking for something that is accurate enough to be used as a teaching tool - ie allows multiple p_layer_s, etc. It can simulate all the different 'strategies' and allow new concepts to be tried out - and try out nuclear wars in different periods (ie what would have happened if the Russians had forced a nuclear war in 1961?). i would also like to here about anything of interest. The more realalistic the better. Nuclear war is somthing that somone should really to into simulating as a game. If anyone knows anything about computer game that simulate it then be sure and speak up. Harpoon, and Civ don't count. andy 'There is no medical problem that can not be made worse through surgery'

It's kind of hard to make a fun simulation of nuclear war, folks(with the exception of Nuclear War , the card game, which treats the whole matter with a HEAVY dose of satire). The only possible game elements I could see would be some sort of anti-missile defense simulation, a bit like a heavily enhanced Missile Command...this idea has been tried before, but never very succesfully(except M.C., of course). Otherwise, where's the play value? You either have a game where you launch dozes of nukes back and forth and kill millions of innocent civilians and bring about full-scale Nuclear Winter, thereby ending or SEVERELY damaging human civilization(nobody wins..how do you score this thing?), or have some sort of limited conflict where you limit your wanton distruction to a mostly military purpose. The latter idea IS a bit more feasible, but still not much fun. Ever use nukes in Harpoon? Do YOU find it entertaining? Takes away most of the play value, in my opinon...this would probably apply to any sim that tackled this issue. I realize I'm coming across as a pascifistic moralistic, here to imbue you with anti-nuclear sentiment, but read up on nuclear warfare sometime(I strongly recommend A Path Where No Man Thought ...the authors of which I cannot remember at present). Nobody can, or will, win a nuclear conflict. Even limited nuclear usage has staggering reprucussions...look at Chernobyl, Nagasaki, Hiroshima...the effects of which are still apparent today. And even putting aside real life(which most of us do for sims and wargames), nukes just do not make for good games when they are the sole subject of the program. They're just too damn powerful! (Ok, ok...you want a realistic simulation of nuclear warfare? I got one for ya...go dig up an old copy of Balance of Power by Chris Crawford. It's got the best handling of a nuclear conflict ever seen on the computer screen! Really, try it, you'll have to agree!) =-) Jason

Otherwise, where's the play value? You either have a game where you launch dozes of nukes back and forth and kill millions of innocent civilians and bring about full-scale Nuclear Winter, thereby ending or SEVERELY damaging human civilization(nobody wins..how do you score There was a simple game MANY years ago called Nuke War by Avalon Hill. The gaming elements included, deciding what to build, where to build it, and whether or not to attack. You could build missile silos, submarines, fighter/bomber _base_s, ABM _base_s, or you could spy on the enemy. It was meant to be a fun game and I played it for hours. Of course there wasn't much else to play in those days. Each turn of peace, you could build one thing. If war started, you could activate only a small number of _base_s per turn (1 or 2). Submarines were immune to attack once at sea but they took a few turns to get on station. Bombers were slow, but they could see the enemy terrain and targets still viable meaning cities or missile silos not yet fired. ABM _base_s got one shot at incoming missiles, but multiple shots at incoming bombers. Fighters were used to attack enemy bombers or to escort your bombers. However, the point is that there is some game play elements there that could make a fun game to play.

I think there are pleaty cool ideas that could be made into ta great game. There are two tracks that could be taken. One use a modern semi first person approch. You could play the head of states of a nuclear power, take charge ot the military statagy, approprations, domestic politics, and other diplomicy. Keep yourself and your country both alive and thriving. See how hard it is to convince the senate to fund thoughs missles, and try to keep track of your forces from Airforce One. Evacuating D.C.(or Moscow). Fighting a limited/involved/fullscale conventional war from your capital(or other secure site with the posibility to escilation to a limited/uncontroled nuclear/chemical/biological war that threatens national survival. use espionoge, economics, and/or military force to advance your position as a nation/leader. This game could be either a more detailed CivII(in fact if you just edited the units a little i.e. make the same number of units but all of the from the time period 1940-2020) or make it one of thoughs multimedia walk through movies (a practical MYST). Walking through the white house, watching the video from your last LGBs, interviewing spies. Kind of like Spycraft only you are a very involved head of state. i personally would like somthing like Civ were you control the National Labs(los alamos, sandia, livermore) direct research, the testing gounds, calculate throw weights, megatonage(more importantly/practically/realistically-kilotonage), bunker depth, Circular Error Probibility(CEP), footprint size, Satallite Flybys(with realistic 10cc IR resolution), CVN, Boomer, hunterkiller patrol areas, forward deploy bombers. All the nuts and bolts of our statigic forces in the 80's. A lot of thought went into the building and deployment of thoughs assets and if you could put similar thought into it it would be sort of fun. I know that it is too much to ask for with such a limited market but i can at least dream. andy 'There is no medical problem that can not be made worse through surgery'
