I saw an electric countertop grill at the local Target store today. I read a bit about them today on internet. One person was recommending the types that work both from the top and the bottom. How do you folks feel about these types of grills and what brand do you recommend? Other than the absence of charcoal/mesquite smell, how does grilling with these compare to a regular barbecue set? Again I am looking for a small one that I can use indoors, and once in a while take it to the patio. Thanks! Deguza I used to have a table top model that consisted of a heavy crock bottom, _meta_l liner, element, and grill top. It worked fine but was too small. I now have a large rectangle model that consists of a tray on legs, a heavy grill with small side griddle, and a splatter guard. It is open as in not having a top like the George Foreman grills. Both the tray and the grill are dishwasher safe. I had thought of getting a George Foreman but I rarely use mine as it is. I only use the electric grill a couple times a year. Our natural gas barbeque is close to the back entry and used year round. We barbeque a couple of times a week on a regular basis but almost daily when the weather turns warm. IMO, the electric grill is fine but doesn't give the same flavour as the gas grill. It's still better than no grill

Even with water in the tray, there is some smoke generated. The smoke is enough to set off smoke detectors so these need to be disarmed while using the electric grill. Our smoke detectors are part of our monitored security system so we can't disarm them. DH puts a plastic bag over them whenever I use the electric grill. If possible use under your stove fume hood to vent the smoke outdoors. A bowl of vinegar will help with the left over smoke odours. My second problem with the electric grill is the enery consumption. Even if you don't pay for your electricity (e.g. part of your rent), conserving is still a concern. In our case, I know that natural gas is cheaper than electric so it is cheaper for me to use the gas barbeque than the electric grill. The third problem I have with the electric grill is I have to use another appliance to cook the vegetables whereas with the gas barbeque I can cook everything on it. The final problem I have is the size. It is really only sized for a couple of people. With all that said, one of our kids is in an apartment and cannot have a propane barbeque. We are considering getting the kid a George Foreman. Since it closes, the smoking would be minimal and would give the barbeque result yet still comply with the rules.
