historical stock price Adjusting historical stock prices for splits -- am I missing something?

I have been a Verizon (GTE) stockholder since the mid 80's. I have recently found a need to establish the GTE stock price at some points in the past. Since the symbol GTE no longer exists, I had a hard time finding a historical stock price tool that would help me. I tried using the Stock Price History tool from the Verizon web page (http://investor.verizon.com/stock/lookup.cgi). However, the prices I was seeing did not agree with other documents I had, even allowing for splits. For example: 5/19/86, NY Times shows GTE closed at $48.75. Since then, there has been a 3:2 split (Jan '87) and a 2:1 split (May '90), therefore, the adjusted price on that date should be (48.75*2/3)/2 = $16.25. However, the tool on the Verizon page says GTE closed at $8.28 on that date. 6/30/87, NY Times shows GTE closed at $38.125. Since then, there has just been the 2:1 split (May '90), therefore, the adjusted price on that date should be (38.125/2) = $19.06. However, the tool on the Verizon page says GTE closed at $10.43 on that date. Am I not adjusting for the splits correctly? I feel like the tool on the Verizon page is wrong, but I haven't gotten any response to an E-mail I sent their investor relations regarding this. Since this all affects my tax liability, I'd like to get it right. Any thoughts or any suggestions of another historical price tool that will work for GTE? Thank You
