My wife and I are working on plans for our addition, which will include a new breakfast nook. We're having a difficult time placing it within the space available, and wondered if there is a rule of thumb for the maximum practical distance from the kitchen to the breakfast nook.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As long as you can see when the coffee maker is done and/or hear the tea kettle start whistling, it is close enough. Basically, it needs to be within a few steps of the cooking /refrig area, or it isn't a breakfast nook, it's a small dining room. Think how you will use the space, especialy when more than the 2 of you are being fed. One person cooks, usually, and the other sits and converses, or reads the paper, or whatever. If you want more OJ, or forget the butter or something, do you want to have to walk very far? aem sends....

You're right, but unfortunately it appears OP was looking for a 'rule', like it must be within 11 feet (no, no, don't go by that, I just made it up arbitrarily as an example!!!!). -v.
