What do you recommend? Many thanks Unkbeel Like you, I was recently in the market for a cell phone. Not for general use, but for emergencies when we travel. My son-in-law owns a Radio Shack and he recommended a TracFone. With this you buy a phone

The Tracfone site says that when roaming, 1 minute = 2 units. Is there something else involved that eats up the units? The Tracfone my wife bought had, somewhere in the manual, the note that roaming was 4 units for 1 minute. I know I saw the same 2 fer 1 on the web site. She took the Tracfone back so I don't have the proof <g anymore. Hugh

Some of the replies here have bee about monthly payment plans. Since you asked about PRE-PAID plans, I can recommend the AT&T national plan. The web site with all the info is... http://www.attws.com/personal/prepaid/ The drawback with the plan is that you have to add time every 3 months or you will lose any existing minutes currently on your phone. So, you have to add $25 worth of time every 3 months ($100 a year). The $25 will add about 37 minutes of national time. The more money you add, the cheaper the per minute cost will be. As long as you add some time every three months, the minutes on the phone are retained and keep adding up. I have this plan and I just went to their website to add minutes only to find out that this plan has changed and you can no longer buy minutes on the internet. They can now be ordered over your cell phone although there is no information of the website as to how. You have to go to an AT&T store to find out what the new plan is and how it works. According to the website you will lose any unused minutes when being switched to their new plan. What a way to run a business. There oughta be a law. Don

Tracfone roaming used to be 4 units/min, was changed to 2 units/min sometime in the past year or so. I know this firsthand as I have one and checked how many units were used on a roaming call. Yes, the manual says 4 units because they didn't bother reprinting the manual for this one change (or maybe there's old stock floating around). snipped Thanks. At least I know now I wasn't nuts. It still makes the charge, when roaming, about $1.60/minute. And, you still need to have a good bank of minutes if you're going to use it for emergencies. Hugh

I note that the ATT Prepaid appears to be digital, and as far as I know, digital coverage is not currently as complete as analog - particularly off the beaten track. I put in my zip code, and it told me that coverage is not yet available in my area...........

website is correct, they apparently use Any analog tower you happen to be in range of. That would seem to mean that they would be at least equal in coverage to the best of the analog phone plans - assuming that the Nokia is not underpowered compared to other handhelds.
