Like the sub that got within torpedo range of the Kittyhawk, and that with a 688 boat escorting it? Why would we sink a submarine in peacetime ? We wouldn't. But we'd definitely know that they were being watched and that we didn't want them that close. And playing chicken with a 688 and it's crew is a really bad idea. You ever consider that the chinese sub surfaced as a surrender to being hounded ?

): ... The closest to the 7th Fleet are Taiwan, Japan, and the Philipines. And they are all within range of the Chinese medium range missiles..... One hour after a missile hit a ship in the 7th Fleet, Europe, America and Japan would blockade China. and no exports would go out and no imports would come in. The Chinese economy would implode. Cough cough... SO would ours. Everything we use is stamped Made in CHINA. Lots of crap we can get made in Malasia, Indonesia and other places...

grandkids that I'd like to see live a full and happy life. They're not gonna, if the Asian equivalent of Joe Masterace gets his way. So, I'd rather see everybody thinking about it, arguing about it, fighting tooth and nail, because nobody's gonna do anything to solve the problem if it gets ignored and most of what I see coming out of Washington and especially the civilian side, is pretending that it doesn't exist. And that will kill us. We're like the French, figuring that if we ignore mobile warfare theories, they'll just go away. That ain't gonna happen for us anymore than it happened for them. So, if y'all wanna poke holes, go right ahead on and do it, and I'll keep arguing my points until you've either conclusively proven me wrong or the Chinese blow all of our asses off the map. <Chuckle

So are you saying we should have a ABC Extreme Makeover, shipbuilding edition? Not me, that's the other bloke touting destroyers built in two weeks like they did it for all of them. They didn't, they built a few ships on accelerated schedules with lots of pre planning. The Chinese can still build faster than we can, because they've got the plant in place to do it. What I want is for us to put the plant in place to be able to replace losses during wartime so that we can fight a protracted war, rather than being put into the situation of being on the way to losing if we don't win in the first couple of hundred hours after actual combat starts. Four to six years for an Arleigh Burke and Twelve for a Nimitz is way too long. How do you justify an idle shipyard ?

Personally, I think that for most stuff we should go back to the system that we had in the 20's and 30's where you had companies making weapons and marketing them, and the services were not at all involved in their export. The services arn't involved with the export.
