<Note:  I noticed a few things about this guy's minor league career; on his first professional _base_ball team (1940), the Paragould Browns of the Northeast Arkansas League, he was a teammate of Tom Greenwade, who had greater fame as a New York Yankee scout (Mickey Mantle, Hank Bauer, Elston Howard, Bill Virdon and Bobby Murcer) and he was also a teammate of Julius Schoendienst, who once built a bicycle for his younger brother.  Tom Greenwade was one of those who convinced Branch Rickey to sign Jackie Robinson. FROM:  The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (April 11th) ~ Glen Schaeffer, a member of the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame and former minor league _base_ball p_layer_, died April 3, 2008, of bladder cancer in California. He was 88. Mr. Schaeffer, who grew up here, played shortstop in the minor league organizations of the St. Louis Browns, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Braves from 1938 to 1952, except for four years he spent in the Army during World War II. He played goalie for St. Louis soccer teams sponsored by the late Joe Simpkins that won two national amateur championships. He was inducted into the local Soccer Hall of Fame in 1980. Mr. Schaeffer was an agent for the Monarch and General American insurance companies. He lived in Clayton until 1986, when he retired and moved to Huntington Beach, Calif. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. May 2 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in St. Louis, followed by a memorial Mass at 10 a.m. His remains were cremated.
