    Also, in this context I use the term USAmerican vs Canadian,    because  Canada's in America too.  I'm in the Bronx, NY, BTW.    Everything else you've written should be added to the FAQ for Who does that?    rec.sport.football.cdn, but not the above bit  Canada is in North    America...since the mostly commonly held belief is that America    refers only to the 50 states of same If it were done consistently, that'd be one thing, but it's not. Taxonomists refer to Western Hemisphere species of many living things as American , which certainly aren't limited to the US.  The explorers who are said to have discovered America (Columbus or Vikings) didn't see current US territory.  We refer to American Indians or Amerindians (not Usindians) as not limited to the USA; sometimes it even refers to everyone from Eskimos to Incas, but even when used more narrowly it refers to tribes not limited to the US.  There's the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada

Perhaps so we couldn't confuse them with the United    States of Europe? =^) There were all these colonies with names that carry over to the respective states today.  When the Declaration of Independence was written, there seemed no other good way to describe them in sum.  The relevant passage comes near the end: We therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly Publish and Declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent States.... Note that even with the mania for capitalization, in the united States of America in the first line, the u is in lower case, so the country name United States of America was not yet contemplated.  OTOH, it IS capitalized in United Colonies
