Also, in this context I use the term USAmerican vs Canadian, because Canada's in America too. I'm in the Bronx, NY, BTW. OK, there are various minor differences I don't even have memorized, and also there are 2 major football codes in Canada (CFL & Football Canada, formerly CAFA), and 3 in the USA (NFL, NCAA, and NFSHSA

People and things from Canada are Canadian. People and things from Mexico are Mexican. People and things from the United States of America are American not USAmerican. Collectively, we are all North American. I could be wrong, but I believe that we are the only country in the world with the word America in our name. I'm sure most people from the other countries in this hemisphere would _object_ to being called Americans. Sorry about my little rant. I really mean no offense. I have always shown repect for other people's nationalities and have tried to refer to them properly. Actually, Canada is in North America. People and things from Canada are Canadian. People and things from Mexico are Mexican. People and things from the United States of America are American not USAmerican. Collectively, we are all North American. I could be wrong, but I believe that we are the only country in the world with the word America in our name. So is the United States OF America (being a part thereof). Also, Brazil is in America, Cuba, Argentina, Costa Rica, Mexico etc. Being in the northern half of the Americas, we are in NORTH America. Argentina on the other hand is in the south and is part of SOUTH America. I don't know why the United States elected to use America as part of their name. Perhaps so we couldn't confuse them with the United States of Europe? =^) There were all these colonies with names that carry over to the respective states today. When the Declaration of Independence was written, there seemed no other good way to describe them in sum. The relevant passage comes near the end: We therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly Publish and Declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent States.... Note that even with the mania for capitalization, in the united States of America in the first line, the u is in lower case, so the country name United States of America was not yet contemplated. OTOH, it IS capitalized in United Colonies

I never understood why you keep using this term USAmerican when referring to people or things originating in the United States of America. I'm trying to show more respect to Canadians when I use the term USAmerican. (I've seen some online write USAn .) A few years ago I read in the Wall St. Journal (didn't go down to see it myself) of an animated Times Square light-sign display on this subject. The USA was shown on a map of America, with an arrow pointing to the US saying, This is not America. Then a caption appeared with arrows pointing to places from northernmost Canada to Tierra Del Fuego, saying America . It was part of someone's attempt to get more respect for the rest of America. So I thought it disrespectful to refer to American football as distinct from Canadian football, because Canadian football is every bit as American as USAn football. However, because some use the language that way, to be clear, when I refer to the game as a whole I call it North American football. When I'm writing on this subject in a forum where there might be some doubt, I'll do such things as make the intercalation, National [USA] Football League .
