a common source of leaks is that some _object_ is shared by multiple parts of the program which may have different durations, so it's hard to know when to free it; in this case you just can't have those _object_s. Unix TeX apparently has many memory leaks - it's a `run and quit' app. What claim doesn't seem to be applicable in this case from what I can see - I dunno, though. Apparently, TeX doesn't cause trouble with its memory leaks unless you leave it running - which is not normal. TeX is a trivial program compared with a web browser. A web browser has network connections, _java_script__ programs running in it, various plugins written by third parties, and so on. If it just displayed HTML pages and followed _link_s, the situation would be more comparable, but browsers do far more than that now.

TeX has always done rather more than what you seem to think it does. I have a fair idea what Web browsers get up to, you know. I've just no idea how they do it. Rowland.

ok, I will play your game briefly, [snip] If that's how you see it, I'll not take any further part. I resent your contempt of me. Rowland.

On Sat, 3 May 2008 14:56:59 +0100, Adrian Tuddenham wrote My file structure is extremely simple, just three main folders in a document folder which has a permanent alias on the desktop. I can find it as quickly by the conventional way as by hovering around looking for the dock and working out what it does. Looking for the dock ?? How hard is it to find?? I keep it hidden because I don't want it appearing over the top of my work and getting in the way. If there was an easy way to get rid of it permanently, I would be pleased to do it. there is; switch it off.

Do you, Rowland, accept that your way of working suits you very well but may not suit other people? Yes or no? <puzzled Why ask that question? <sigh Because it seemed to me to be at the very heart of what we were arguing about, that's why. So why not just humour me and answer it? Please? Jim
