I installed FreeBSD a few years ago now and have gradually migrated everything I do from Windows to FreeBSD.  All I have to do now is replace the 35mm slide scanner with one supported by SANE and my personal computer usage will be totally MS free. That's my last problem, too, my scanner is not supported by SANE. But I was told first to check if I can make it work with WINE and Ndiswrapper. Monika.

With all the screaming going on already and sure to increase exponentially over the next two years as Vista becomes more commonplace, I don't see XP getting 'orphaned' as Win98 SE was (without legal challenges) for a very long time (~4 years at least). Windows XP has about two more years of support from now. Monika.

Many, including me, said that about Win98 too.  But the day comes when you want or need a new bit hardware and the current OS isn't supported with drivers. I'm still running 98SE and it hasn't happened to me yet. The only thing I have seen that might need is Ipod and I am not falling for that boondoggle either. There is a W/98 workaround for that too. I had trouble with a TV card. It said there's support for Win98se on the box, but it was poor and newer boxes of the same card eliminated Win98se. There are also USB sticks and drives that don't have drivers for Win98se anymore. About software: The new Skype version doesn't run on Win98se. An old one was hard to find and it crashed frequently. That's why I moved from Win98se to Kubuntu last year. Monika.

If you run defrag on the Windows partition that you want to make smaller so that the rest of that space goes towards Linux, the installer will be able to do that (i.e. reduce the size) automatically during the installation.   Thought that was partition by partition. And not for non-MS ones. I don't understand what you mean.   I don't think that the Windows defrag utility works on other non-microsoft disk partitions.

I said: If you have installed Windows, you can just install Linux besides it. The Linux installer will make the Windows partition smaller. But so that the Linux installer can make the Windows partition smaller without data loss, one has to run defrag on the Windows partition before. Monika.
